All about Oats!

All about Oats!

I have been researching oats for my new Pure Oat Soap. It is made with luscious Oat Milk and ground oats, an excellent choice for those of us with sensitive skin. A luxurious natural soap that is colour and fragrance free! A really soothing treat for the skin!

A few interesting oaty facts:

- Oats, scientifically known as Avena sativa, are a versatile cereal grain that belongs to the Poaceae grass family. The plant is cultivated mainly for its nutritious and edible starchy grains. Oats are known for their high fibre content, especially beta-glucans, which have been linked to various health benefits, including improved heart health

- Oats are a wholesome source of complex carbohydrates that are also a good source of protein. Oats contain more protein compared to grains like rice or wheat

- Oats have natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

These properties are mainly attributed to the presence of various bioactive compounds in oats, including:

  1. Beta-Glucans: Oats are particularly rich in beta-glucans, a type of soluble fibre. Beta-glucans have been linked to anti-inflammatory effects
  2. Antioxidants: Oats contain antioxidants which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These compounds may contribute to reducing oxidative stress in the body
  3. Vitamin E: Oats contain vitamin E, a fat-soluble antioxidant that plays a role in protecting cells from oxidative damage

- Oats are naturally nourishing and moisturising and are well known for helping to hydrate and soothe itchy, dry and sensitive skin making them a popular ingredient in skincare products.

Here's how oats can benefit the skin:

  1. Hydration: Oats contain beta-glucans, which have the ability to attract moisture to the skin. This helps in maintaining hydration levels, making oats beneficial for individuals with dry or dehydrated skin
  2. Soothing: Oats have anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe irritated and itchy skin. They are often used in products designed for individuals with sensitive skin or conditions like eczema or dermatitis
  3. Emollient Qualities: Oats have emollient properties, meaning they can help soften and smooth the skin. This can be particularly beneficial for individuals dealing with rough or chapped skin
  4. Natural Cleansing: Oats can act as a gentle natural cleanser, removing dirt and oil without stripping the skin of its natural oils. This makes them suitable for sensitive skin that may be easily irritated by harsher cleansers

- Finely ground oats can be added to bath water to soothe inflamed or irritated skin.

Here's a simple way to create an oatmeal bath*:

  • Grind oats into a fine powder using a blender or food processor.
  • Add the ground oats to a warm bath as it fills
  • Soak in the bath for about 15-20 minutes.

*Please note I am not a medical professional and that while oatmeal baths can be soothing, individuals with specific skin conditions or allergies should consult with a healthcare professional before trying new skincare remedies.

Who knew the common plain oat was so amazing!
